Behind this event were months and months of hard work and new experiences in a completely unfamiliar field for us at Kite Village Sardinia. Thanks to the valuable support of the professionals from the CKWI class and FIV, Mirco Babini and Claudio Alessandrello, we were able to organize an event that will remain in everyone’s memory.
The waiting period began on May 8th and was windy every day, but the wind never quite reached the intensity we needed—until the very last day, May 29th. The forecast predicted 25 knots of Mistral: athletes registered at the last minute, doing somersaults to find flights and ferries to reach us, which were expensive at this time of year. But the passion for kitesurfing and the desire to compete overcame every obstacle, and many showed up, full of energy and excitement for this race day.
At 8:30 AM, the skipper meeting was held with race director Claudio Alessandrello, head judge Michele Leoni, and judge Eddy Piana, all well-known in the kiting world for their judging experience. Also present was Federico Usai, an injured athlete who couldn’t compete but provided valuable input thanks to his deep knowledge of Big Air tricks. All competing athletes were there, focused and ready. And last but not least, our host Pietro Iovinella gave a warm welcome: “Good luck to all, give it your best!”
We headed to the spot: the wind was there but still light, around 18 knots. The athletes started getting ready, and in no time, the wind picked up, showing us that this would finally be the right day! It built steadily to a solid 25 knots and even gained another 5 knots thanks to thermal wind—perfect conditions to compete. The lagoon was glassy flat and cleared of other kiters, who watched from the beach as the young athletes put on a show.
The level of competition was incredibly high. The riders were stoked, and after every heat, their smiles and reactions filled us with joy: “These are the best conditions we’ve seen in years of competing,” said the seasoned riders.
After 3 hours of massive jumps and thrilling tricks, we had a podium—but the athletes were in no rush to hear the results. The conditions were just too perfect. They wanted to keep riding and putting on a show for hours and hours at Punta Trettu.
In the afternoon, the ABSOLUTE podium was finally announced, with world-class scores and just 2 points separating 1st and 4th place:
A deserving 4th place went to TOMMY BORGI, competing in his first Italian Championship and clearly a rising star in Big Air kitesurfing. He also won “Best Trick” with a perfectly executed and stylish doobie loop board-off.
Thanks to all the other athletes who competed—you truly put on a show!
The event concluded with heartfelt thanks to the Municipality of San Giovanni Suergiu and the Region of Sardinia for sponsoring the event, and to the Port Authorities of Portoscuso and Sant’Antioco for enabling it to happen. We promise that next year’s edition will be even more spectacular.
A traditional dinner and DJ set closed out the day, recharging the athletes and everyone who participated, leaving everyone deeply satisfied and emotional after the success of this amazing event.
WE CAN’T WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN! THANK YOU ALL!
