KVS | Kitesurf school in Sardinia - Punta Trettu
ArrayThe ideal spot for kitesurfing in Sardinia
The Spot of Punta Trettu is highly regarded throughout Europe and is certainly one of the best spots for kitesurfing in Sardinia, Italy and maybe Europe According to many professional kiters it is definitely as good as the Brazilian lagoons, for steady winds and flat water!”.
From April to October the air temperature is between 18 and 35 degrees Celsius and the water temperature is generally between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius.
The recommended wetsuit in Punta Trettu is: 5.4 mm from October until the beginning of May, 3.2 mm during the months of June and September, a lycra for July and August (a 2.5 mm for those most sensitive to cold).
The kite spot of Punta Trettu is much appreciated for the conditions of crystal clear, flat water and shallow sandy bottoms both of which contribute to make it an ideal spot not only for cruising but also for practicing more technical freestyle tricks. The open space can accommodate many kiters in absolute safety and has separate areas for teaching and for riding. Our beach staff will give you all the necessary information to make the best out of your kiting session.
The configuration of the terrain guarantees safety in all kinds of wind conditions and directions. As a matter of fact, the shallow strip of sand that stretches the beach out to the water has always been considered as a safety zone, a “shore to rely on” whatever the wind direction may be. In case of any problems during your kiting session or if you are simply learning how to ride upwind, it will be always easy to walk safely back to shore.
Here the wind blows constantly throughout the year Entering the bay and growing in intensity. It is always very steady, never gusty, especially from the directions of Mistral (NW) and Sirocco (SE).
The Mistral (North-West) is the predominant wind in Sardinia, especially during spring and summer, and in Punta Trettu it blows strong and steady.
Thanks to the thermal effect generated by the morphological configuration of the land and supported by the pine forest behind the bay, the Mistral – in conditions of clear or partially cloudy sky – enters the bay between 5 and 10 knots stronger than what is shown on the Windguru, Windfinder and Windy forecasts!
The Sirocco (South-East) is opposite in direction to the Mistral and it is channeled perfectly through the bay. It passes the strait of Sant’Antioco and enters the bay clean and steady. It also benefits from the thermal effect. The Sirocco is the dominant wind during the months of September and October.
The West wind works fairly well from spring to autumn.
The East wind enters the bay rather clean and Punta Trettu is perhaps the only spot on the south-west coast that works well with Levante and with all winds from the East!
The Tramontane (North) enters cold and very strong during winter (it might reach speeds of over 50 knots).
Punta Trettu is an authorized kite zone. It is under direct supervision of the beach staff who is prepared to provide rescuing in case of need. Inside the bay the kite spot is divided into two areas, marked by a shallow strip of sand that stretches out to the water and that usually resurfaces during low tide. One area is reserved for kitesurfing courses, the other area is used by independent riders. On land there is a specific launching/landing area. All riders are kindly requested to use this safe area, as operating kite equipment outside of this area may be unsafe due to the presence of trees and other large obstacles.
About 500 meters from shore there is an historical navigation channel. Crossing this channel is severely forbidden, as it is reserved for boats heading to or coming from the port of Sant’Antioco. The channel may be identified by some buoys and signal poles as well as by signs placed on the beach. We recommend all riders arriving for the first time in Punta Trettu to inquire at our reception desk about the authorized kiting areas and the services we offer.
Depending on the presence of swimmers and beachgoers, the beach area right in front of our center may be subject to some safety rules. Usually swimmers are not coming to the beach on days with wind above 15 knots, however it is best practice to set up, launch and land your kite away from swimmers and beach umbrellas if present.
Furthermore, if you want to ride in this area it is strongly recommended to keep clear from shore (at least 200 meters by law) and from the small marina. This is to avoid putting other people’s safety at risk. Especially with Mistral wind, which blows on-shore, if a kite flies out of control or falls from the sky due to turbulence, people walking or laying on the beach may get hurt. Therefore neither teaching nor beginners are allowed in this area! More experienced kiters who wish to ride in this area, please pay particular attention to launching and landing your kite as the wind is particularly turbulent here.
From October 1st to April 30th the designated riding area shrinks considerably as it is a period dedicated to a particular type of local fishing. Therefore it is necessary to respect the fishing areas identified by the small flags and floating buoys placed on top of the fishing nets. In the remaining months riders may still see fishing nets spread out through the lagoon. Generally these nets are placed far from the designated riding areas, however in case you want to ride far from shore, please pay particular attention to these fishing nets.
