We can’t really claim to know the whole story of Punta Trettu, but we – the people of Kite Village Sardinia – can certainly tell you the entire story related to kitesurfing because we are the ones who have conceived it back in 2012 and have been developing it ever since. “Narrow sandbar” is the meaning translated from Sardinian, which identifies the characteristic strip of sand that divides the lagoon in two parts.
At the time, only a few of us were lucky enough to know this kitesurfing paradise, immediately defined as “the secret spot”, hardly visible on the map compared to Sardinia’s classic and more touristic destinations. Hidden from the uninhabited side of Sant’Antioco’s island, this spot was used exclusively by locals for fishing.
Looking for a special place…
We were kiters and instructors in search of a special place where to teach kitesurfing and we couldn’t help noticing how many sunny and windy days were typical of this location. Punta Trettu immediately became our favorite kite spot. We realized that the features of this lagoon, with its shallow, flat water and rock-free, sandy bottoms were truly unique and ideal for teaching this sport. We were foreseeing excellent results for our students in terms of safety and ease of learning. From here the idea of a permanent kite school in Punta Trettu was born.
At the time it was difficult to imagine how the entire spot would develop, the only area where kitesurfing was practiced was at the end of the sandbar, where the wind was stronger and steadier. In the small bay in front of our current center, boats were moored in no particular order and the marina was not operational. It seemed impossible for us to use this area for riding. Back then, because of the small number of riders and students, the bay on the left, which is now the official kitesurfing area, had never been considered for kiting.
The Kite Village Sardegna comes to life
It was 2012 and several schools began giving freelance kite lessons in Punta Trettu. At the same time we were setting up our headquarters in front of the spot, in an old rustic house that is still the Kite Village Sardinia today. The years that followed were wonderful: 2013 marked the official opening of the KVS center and it was an immediate success. Word got around and thanks to a strong online presence and a very dedicated team, we quickly gained notoriety all over Europe.
We are grateful to this corner of paradise for having welcomed us, we are happy to be the promoters of this wonderful sport here in Punta Trettu and we are proud to be able to say that for almost 10 years the Kite Village Sardinia has set the benchmark against which other schools in the region measure their performance. The KVS center together with its team of 10 professional instructors has been acknowledged by the Italian Sailing Federation. Every year more than 5000 kiters from all over Europe come to Punta Trettu and enjoy our services.
